Red light therapy and neurofeedback

Mental health tools are evolving. Alongside psychotherapy, medications, and healthy habits, new technologies are helping the brain heal itself — gently and noninvasively. One of these rising tools is red light therapy (also called photobiomodulation, or PBM). Paired with neurofeedback, it’s a powerful combo that can support mood, sleep, focus, and clarity.

In her practice in Bellaire, Texas, Dr. Marcia Lindsey, PsyD, offers these modalities together — aiming to help clients feel more balanced, resilient, and calm.

What is red light therapy?

Red light therapy uses gentle beams of red and near-infrared light to stimulate the brain’s own energy systems. The light reaches neurons and their mitochondria — the “powerhouses” inside each cell — helping them produce energy more efficiently.

When brain cells have more energy, they communicate more smoothly and recover more quickly from stress. That means clearer thinking, steadier moods, and more restful sleep.

Most clients describe sessions as deeply relaxing — like taking the brain to a quiet spa. There’s no pain, heat, or downtime.

How red light therapy helps the brain

The brain is an energy-hungry organ, using about 20% of the body’s total oxygen and fuel. When stress, poor sleep, or chronic emotional strain disrupt that energy supply, brain cells can struggle to maintain balance. That’s where red light therapy comes in.

By supporting mitochondrial function and improving circulation, red light therapy can:

  • Boost energy in brain cells — helping neurons communicate more smoothly
  • Reduce oxidative stress and inflammation — key contributors to fatigue and “brain fog”
  • Enhance oxygen and nutrient delivery — improving overall brain health
  • Support emotional regulation — by promoting flexible, resilient brain networks

During a session, you simply sit comfortably while wearing a soft Vielight headset that delivers light to specific areas of the scalp. Some devices also include a tiny intranasal light that rests gently in one nostril — it glows softly and helps light reach deeper regions of the brain through the rich blood vessels inside the nasal cavity.

Sessions last about 20 minutes, leaving most people calm, refreshed, and often pleasantly surprised by how peaceful the experience feels.

The research behind Vielight devices

Vielight is one of the leading innovators in brain photobiomodulation. Their technology has been tested in studies exploring memory, cognition, mood, and sleep — all areas that directly affect mental health.

Here are some highlights from their research and related studies:

Sharper thinking and memory:
In a University of Toronto study, adults with mild cognitive impairment (often a precursor to dementia) used a Vielight device daily for six weeks. Participants who received red light therapy showed improvements in executive function and brain connectivity, along with healthier brain metabolism on scans. Some even showed positive shifts in blood markers linked to Alzheimer’s disease risk.

Improved mood and reduced depression:
A 2024 review of multiple clinical trials found that red light therapy can significantly ease depressive symptoms. By improving cellular energy and oxygen flow, the treatment helps the brain self-regulate more effectively.

Better sleep and emotional balance:
Clinical and practice-based reports show that photobiomodulation helps regulate brain rhythms that control the sleep-wake cycle. Clients often notice they fall asleep more easily and wake feeling clearer and calmer.

Protection and repair:
Early research suggests that red light therapy may support recovery from brain injuries and protect against cellular stress, thereby reducing inflammation and improving neuronal resilience.

These findings are early but promising — and they echo what many clients experience: a brain that feels more energized, balanced, and at ease.

Why pair red light therapy with neurofeedback?

Neurofeedback gives your brain real-time feedback about its own electrical activity, helping it learn healthier patterns (e.g., reducing overactivity in anxiety or increasing regulation in focus).

When red light therapy is added, it seems to prime the brain, making neurons more energetic, responsive, and ready to adapt. Think of it like warming up before exercise: muscles (or in this case, neural circuits) learn more efficiently when they’re adequately fueled and relaxed.

When combined, the two approaches often lead to:

  • Faster progress in reducing anxiety or intrusive thoughts
  • Improved sleep quality and deeper rest
  • More explicit focus and mental stamina
  • A steadier, more balanced emotional state

Many clients say they notice improvements sooner and feel that change “sticks” more easily when both methods are used together.

What to expect: Your journey with Dr. Lindsey

Every client’s journey begins with a comprehensive assessment. Dr. Lindsey takes time to understand your symptoms, goals, and lifestyle, then designs a plan that’s tailored to your needs.

Treatment sessions are calm and collaborative. Over time, most clients notice steady improvements — clearer thinking, more relaxed moods, better sleep, and a growing sense of ease. As progress builds, sessions may taper into maintenance, helping you sustain your gains and keep your brain functioning at its best.

Light for the mind, balance for the brain
